Why should a Speech have a Thesis?

If you can't say it in one sentence you don't know it well enough

What is it you want your audience to understand and remember above all else?

You should be able to articulate this in once cohesive sentence, like a thesis. It’s a lot of work to narrow down an entire speech to one sentence and that’s why most people don’t do it. But it’s worth every second of effort.

When you do distill every word into one succinct idea, it makes it easier for your audience to understand that idea. That’s what they walk away with.

If you have many ideas but don’t work at making sure there is one throughline, your audience won’t know what the most important point is. If that’s the case, you risk that they will walk away with something obscure.
