Why Do We Need Power?

Image of a person looking up at the sky that reads "It's logical to be insecure"

Judging others is a powerful way human beings get power. Throughout history, we find countless examples of individual’s unbridled lust for power. But why?

Even when I don’t guard against it, I find my own desire for power gets the better of me. Why?

I believe we want power because we are all basically insecure and power is a way of warding that off. We live on a planet that revolves around a star that hurtles through a universe of inexplicability. That in itself is a very good reason to be insecure. But instead of acknowledging and managing that insecurity, we try to hide it. We try to cover it up with the illusion that we are secure.

Admitting insecurity does make us vulnerable but vulnerability is an excellent way for us to connect with other people (who are also insecure). Power doesn’t actually give us more security. What is does however is start more wars and end more relationships than anything else.
