How Does Judging Work?

Text overlay on images of diverse people that reads "Do we use the right scales to judge?"

How does the process of judging work?

The first thing we do is to decide what the rubric of judgment is. The rubric is based on my values. If someone’s work or behavior aligns with my values, my judgment is positive; if it doesn’t it’s negative.

For me, one of those items on the rubric is how well they speak. A big part of my career was teaching communication and acting so it makes sense I would place value on the ability to do this well. However, someone’s speaking ability shouldn’t determine their value as a person, so judging them on that is unfair.

Other scales on which I rate people include their ability to be engaging, demonstrative and confident. If they rank high on these scales, I judge them to be a better person. But that too is unfair. I think the key is to not use my personal values as the basis of casting judgment.

What if we got to know other people’s values and judged them on those instead of our own values?
