Exercise Your Attention Muscles

black and white image showing hand weights

We blame diminishing attention on technology and how much it distracts us. But we permit it to interrupt us. We can’t eliminate all distractions but we can stop giving most of them the steering wheel. The phone beeps and what do we do?

Research shows it takes 15-20 minutes to regain the level of focus you had before a distraction. While you’re waiting for that clock to run out, there’s another distraction and the clock starts over. Etc. all day.

We could exercise our attention muscles and practice staying focused. We could train those muscles to do the steering, not be steered by the distraction. If we resist distraction our attention grows. Our ability to focus gets stronger. Our ideas develop more complexity and creativity soars.

What could you do with a clearer mind?
