Structure Speech for the Audience

Make sure your path is easy to follow.

You’ve spent a lot of time on your speech but your audience only gets to hear it once, so everything you say has to be geared toward making it easier for them to absorb.

Take them on a journey by having a beginning, a middle and an end. And use signposts:

“First let’s get into this, next we’ll look at that, and finally we’ll tie it all together.”

10-15% of your speech should be introduction. Do not start by introducing yourself; let someone else do that.

Start with a statement that really turns our heads and makes us want to know more. Make sure we know what you’re going to be telling us in the speech and why it is important. Give us a scaffolding, if you will, on which to hang all the information we will hear.

10-15% of your speech should be conclusion. Let us know with your tone of voice (not by saying “in conclusion”) that you are winding down so we can piece your ideas all together in our brain. In the conclusion, review the most important ideas so, if we’ve forgotten everything else, we’ll remember the residual message. End with a strong statement, not by saying “Thank you.”
