On the other side of the power of influence, what do you do to influence others?
What do you do with your power? Is it for reasons of empowerment or subservience? Are your means forthright or deceptive?
If you’re trying to empower someone by influencing them, that’s great. Maybe you’re trying to make them feel bigger. Maybe you’re trying to extend their impact.
Maybe you’re trying to promote their purpose. The fact that it’s other-centered gives it more credibility, makes it important, and heightens its value.
Giving someone else’s opinion more importance that our own can be about kissing up and it becomes subservience. While this raises them up, it disempowers us and diminishes our own value—always a bad reason.
